The path to Wedge Island

I took a moment to stop by Fisherman's Reserve again yesterday. It's such an interesting place, it's hard to pass it by. The path that leads to Wedge Island is very tempting but it's only completely open during low tide. With my luck I'll get stuck out there! There's also a smaller island on the far side of it called Rat Rock! I took the first photo last night, the second was taken a few months ago.

Adapting to changing weather

It's amazing how fast the weather changes here in Nova Scotia. When I left my house today the sky was blue and amazing cloud formations were in the sky. Clouds can add a great deal of depth and texture to a landscape photo so I set out to make the next great one. When I got to my location it was completely overcast so I had to change my attack mode from shooting wide to shooting tight. It was a great evening of exploring the coast and finding great colours, mussels and seaweed! Enjoy.

Seeing Blue

Last year I stumbled on a place where I was able to get shots of ice against the blue sky. I've been waiting all year to return to the same spot but I had to wait for the right conditions. Today was perfect! I knew the tide would be out which gave me access to the ice I needed to make these shots. Here are a few of my favorites from today. I just love that blue!

Tufts Cove Generating Station

Halifax has a series of unmistakable landmarks which include two bridges, a town clock and Citadel Hill to name a few. However, towering 157 meters high are the unmistakable smokestacks from the Tufts Cove Generating Station. On the Dartmouth side of the harbour, it was only a quick trip from my house. To get these images, I used a polarizer to help enhance the contrast. Most effective when used 90 degrees to the sun, a polarizer will help darken the sky, reduce reflections and in this case, brighten the white smoke. The first image is a view from Halifax while the others are from Tufts Cove.

While I was taking these photos someone told me he really liked my car and thought it was very sporty looking. I drive an Optra. The only thing sporty about my Optra are my track pants! I chose that moment as a good time to leave...

Fox Point

Today I ventured out towards Fox Point which is on rte 329. It was a beautiful drive which brought me back to East Chester. Thick clouds rolled in and killed any hope of a sunset. I prepared myself anyway as some of the best sunsets I have seen were in my rearview mirror! Regardless, these are a few from my shoot today.

Crystal Crescent Beach

I took advantage of the "calm before the storm" today and went to Crystal Crescent Beach for sunset. Normally I like to take the hiking trail to the right of the beach but I decided to go left instead. I have been to this beach many times but the best part about being in Nova Scotia is the ever changing weather. You may think you've seen all there is to offer in one spot but the clouds, waves, temperature and of course the light, always combine to give different results. It was a great night of shooting!

Fisherman's Reserve...almost

I tried going to Fisherman's Reserve today but because of the snow, (aka my Optra), I was only able to get so far without getting stuck. I managed to get a few photos but hope to return in the next few days. I have big plans for the weekend and hope to come away with some great shots! Stay tuned!
